Symptom:

When you have paper in the Auto-Document Feeder (ADF) you get a message that there is no paper detected, it is constantly jamming, grabs multiple pages or it doesn't grab at all, it squeaks as it feeds the page or it will only scan from the flatbed. Paper is not feeding properly into the ADF Document Feeder in that the either multiple pages pull through at one time, pages a pulling in crooked, pages are jamming part way through a scan, the tops of the page are getting "tweaked".

Cause:

There are two types of Auto Document Feeder (ADF) scanners; ADF only (Visioneer XP450, XP470, Patriot 430 and Xerox DocuMate 250, 252, 262, 262i, 272, 152) and ADF with a Flatbed scanner (Visioneer 9450, 9650, 9750, Patriot 680, 780 and Xerox DocuMate 510, 515, 520, 632). The types of feeding issues you may see vary depending on which type of scanner you have, and can be caused by any number of things.

Solution:

There are a number of things that may help to resolve feeding issues. Please try one or all of the solutions listed under your scanner model.

Visioneer XP450, XP470 and Xerox DocuMate 250, 252, 262, 262i, 272, 152:

Open the scanner and try the following:
  1. Clean the scanner using the VisionAid Maintenance Kit.
    • If you do not have a Maintenance kit, clean the feed rollers with a Q-Tip dampened with Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol.
    • Excessive dust on the rollers causes the rollers to slip against the paper and makes the rollers appear worn.
    • Rotate the rollers as you are cleaning them to get the entire surface of the rollers clean.
  2. If the scanner makes a high-pitched squeaking or squealing noise as it feeds the page through, make sure the rest of the feed rollers in the scanner rotate properly.
    • The small grey feed rollers can become stuck and may be difficult to move at first
    • Continue rotating the rollers until they rotate smoothly
  3. Check the paper sensor, the small plastic arm on the lid of the scanner; make sure this sensor is not stuck down.
  4. Replace the ADF pad assembly (grey-rubber pad w/2 silver arms on either side).
    • We provide one replacement ADF pad with each scanner. It has a duty cycle of about 3,000-10,000 pages.
    • If you take the pad out and look at it from the side you should see a noticeable indent where the pad has been pushing paper against the feed rollers.
  5. Please be aware that the ADF pad is the only internal part that is replaceable. All other internal components of the scanner are covered under the 1-year warranty or an extended warranty if it was purchased, from our company, at the same time as the scanner.

Visioneer 9450, 9650, 9750, Patriot 680, 780 and Xerox DocuMate 510, 515, 520, 632:
  1. Turn off the scanner, unplug the ADF cable then plug it back in again, turn the scanner back on then test scan.
    • This is the short cable that comes out of the top of the scanner and plugs into the base of the scanner for power and communication.
  2. Use a VisionAid Maintenance Kit to clean the scanner.
    • If you do not have a Maintenance kit, open the ADF door and clean the rollers with a Q-Tip dampened with Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol.
    • Excessive dust on the rollers causes the rollers to slip against the page and makes the rollers appear worn.
    • Rotate the rollers as you are cleaning them to get the entire surface of the rollers clean.
  3. Replace the ADF pad assembly (grey-rubber pad w/2 silver arms on either side).
    • We provide one replacement ADF pad with each scanner. It has a duty cycle of about 20,000 pages.
    • If you take the pad out and look at it from the side you should see a noticeable indent where the pad has been pushing paper against the feed rollers.
  4. Make sure the application your are scanning from (such as PaperPort) has "ADF" selected as the paper source not "Flatbed".
  5. Please be aware that the ADF pad is the only internal part that is replaceable. All other internal components of the scanner are covered under the 1-year warranty or an extended warranty if it was purchased, from our company, within 6 months of the purchase date of the scanner.

Visioneer 9750 and Xerox DocuMate 520 OneTouch 3.0 drivers only:

If you are scanning by pressing a button on your scanner, verify that the OneTouch driver is set to "ADF" as the paper source:
  1. Right-click on the OneTouch icon

  2. Left-click on "Configure"
  3. Under "Formats and Pages" select the ADF icon then click "OK"

  4. Now when you press a button on the scanner the paper should feed through the ADF.

Note: Please check the user guide provided with your scanner under "Configuring the Scanner and Screen Buttons" for detailed instructions on setting up your OneTouch buttons.
