Title: Error Code E8 or E9 on Scanner LED Display
Article ID: VIS1061
Updated: 1/25/2007
Operating Systems: Windows XP / 2000
Scanner Models: Visioneer ADF: PT430
  Xerox: DM150, DM152, DM162

Symptom:

The scanner feeds the paper through the scanner then reports a paper jam. The scanner's LED is flashing "E" then "8" (E8) when there is no paper in the scanner, or "E" then "9" (E9) after receiving a paper jam.

Cause:

Error code "E9" indicates that a paper has jammed in the scanner. Continuing to see "E9" or getting "E8" indicates that after the jammed page has been removed, the paper sensor is still being triggered in some way.

Solution:

Error Code E9 - a page has jammed in the scanner
  1. Turn off the scanner power and close the scanning application you have open.
  2. Open the scanner and remove the jammed paper.
  3. Close the scanner and turn it back on.
  4. The error code "E9" should no longer appear on the scanner's LED.

Error Code E8 - the paper-in tray is not fully seated in the scanner body
Note: The error code E8 generally occurs due to the paper-in tray being pulled forward when a jammed page is removed from the scanner.
  1. Turn off the scanner power and close the scanning application you have open.
  2. Open the scanner.
  3. Take the paper-in tray out of the scanner.
  4. Place the paper-in tray back into the scanner.
  5. Push the paper-in tray back to fully seat it into the scanner body.
  6. Close the scanner and turn it back on.
  7. The error code "E8" should no longer appear on the scanner's LED.
