Update a Driver

What is a driver?
A driver is software that allows your computer to communicate with hardware or devices. Without driver software, the hardware you connect (for example, a video card, a printer or a scanner) will not work properly.

In most cases, driver software comes with Windows or can be found by going to Windows Update in Control Panel and checking for updates. If Windows doesn't have the driver you need, you can find it on the disc that came with the hardware or device you want to use, or on the manufacturer's website.

Repair or update a driver
If a hardware device isn't functioning properly, or if a program or game that you're installing states that it requires newer driver software than you currently have installed, you should check Windows Update for updated driver software. If technical support personnel have asked you to install driver software from a disc or from the device manufacturer's website, you can also manually update driver software for your device.
  • To update driver software using Windows Update
    1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button, clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Update. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    2. In the left pane, click Check for updates.
    3. To see if updated driver software is available, click View available updates. Windows Update will list any updated driver software that's available for devices installed in your computer.
    4. If updates are available, click the driver software that you want to install, and then click Install. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

  • To manually update driver software
You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.
    1. Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Device Manager. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    2. In Device Manager, locate the device you want to update, and then double-click the device name.
    3. Click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.

  • Restore a driver to its previous version
You must be logged on as an administrator to perform these steps.

You might want to restore the driver software for a device to a previous version if you encounter problems with your computer or device after upgrading the driver software.
    1. Open Device Manager by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking Device Manager. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    2. Double-click the category containing your device driver, and then double-click the name of the device you want to restore to a previous driver version.
    3. Click the Driver tab, and then click Roll Back Driver.
Note: If there's no previous version of the driver software installed for the selected device, the Roll Back Driver button will be unavailable.

Click Troubleshoot driver problems if you need help with any of the following:
  • I just installed a new hardware device, and it is not working correctly
  • My device used to work, but now it doesn't.
  • I can't connect to the Internet to update my drivers.
  • I get an error message about Internet protocol (IP) bindings
